Carpark closure I refer to your article re Orakei Point in the East & Bays Courier on March 30. One thing you haven t referred to in your article is that I understand part of the plan involves the closure of the existing park and ride in the area. If this is the case I consider such a move would be scandalous as not only is the existing park and ride well used, such a move would also be contrary to the council s drive for greater use of public transport. Bruce Cade Mission Bay Editor's note: The commissioner s report says the plan change provides for a park and ride for up to 200 spaces as a permitted activity . But it is not yet clear whether a park and ride will be part of the new development. Housing complex In reference to a recent front page article titled, It s like a tomb, I would like to make it perfectly clear that I was only speaking on behalf of Mr Devandra and myself. Christl Krist Ellerslie St Heliers shops The contrast between your two correspondents on March 25, Lynne Scott and Russell Wilson, on the topic of St Heliers shops could not have been more pronounced. The one, the organiser of a praiseworthy but ultimately doomed attempt to save the art- deco house cluster in Turua St is obviously piqued that she and her several hundred friends failed in their objective. That they failed partly because ultimately the houses did not have enough intrinsic quality to be worth saving has not dampened her sense of righteous indignation. Because she lost the battle she threatens to abandon St Heliers Village to its fate and not shop there, thereby damaging it further. In contrast Russell Wilson urges us to support the village shops, no matter how disappointed he may feel about the current development going on. Simple choice -- St Heliers is worth saving -- support it. Michael Phanoulas Remuera Runaway trolley For those of you who park your car in supermarket carparks, be aware not only of the dangers of other careless drivers damaging your vehicle by poor parking, or swing out wide enough to hit your car causing dents, there are other things to watch out for as well. I had the misfortune on March 23 to park in the Countdown carpark at Meadowbank. AsmywifeandIcameoutof the supermarket we were just in time to see a food trolley racing down the slope into somebody s car. Unfortunately that car happened to be ours. While a kind lady who witnessed the whole event helped us search for the culprit, who incidentally was identified as a woman with a child, we were unable to find her as she obviously decided to make a quick escape on foot to avoid her responsibilities. I want to notify this woman, if she reads this letter, that her carelessness is to cost us $757.85 in repairs. She is showing her child a good example of dishonesty, but hopefully her conscience may continue to plague her -- if she has one. Ian Robinson St Johns LOCAL PIX www.localpix.co.nz
