"There was genuine disappointment

The Waitematā Local Board has decided
to recognise community volunteers
young and old with the Waitematā
Good Citizens' Awards 2013, which
will culminate with a presentation
evening at the Auckland Town Hall on
Thursday 30 May.
Three award categories have been
proposed by the Board, and they are:
• Youth Achievement (for nominees
24 years of age and under)
• Community Groups.
"We want to give long overdue credit
to those who make a difference to
the everyday lives of people in the
Waitematā Local Board area," says
board member Tricia Reade.
"These voluntary efforts often go
unnoticed but benefit so many
individuals or wider communities.
"The idea was to launch a high-quality
and meaningful awards scheme to
which people aspire, and encourages
others to offer help and support where
it is needed most."
Nomination forms are available online
waitemata, at the local board office (see
details, bottom right) and local libraries.
The closing date for entries, which can
be drawn from sectors including arts,
heritage and culture to environment,
sport, health and social service, is 5pm
on 19 April.
Tricia Reade urges local people to get
behind the initiative.
"If you know someone or a group
deserving of acknowledgement for
the voluntary work they do, this is the
perfect opportunity to ensure they get
it," she says.
Keep an eye out over the coming weeks
for more news on how the winners will
be chosen and details of what promises
to be a memorable awards ceremony.
