Come November 10, expect to see people of all ages racing up hill and down dale through Meadowbank's parks and side streets. Competitors in The Great Green Meadow- bank Challenge will be seeking and solving clues in a rogaine event organ- ised by children at Mead- owbank School. Think of it as an enor- mous orienteering course with extra challenges along the way. The students have been working on this project in conjunction with their Enviroschools effort, so all tasks follow an environmental theme. It was teacher Karen Knarston's pet project and she's so pleased that staff and students have embraced the idea. Our topic for the term was communication and we wanted to communi- cate through an event. We hope as many people as possible will come along. This could become an annual event.'' There is a small regis- tration fee and funds raised will go to the school. The students would like to see the money used for an environmental project. As part of their research the school took part in a rogaine event at Ambury Farm Park. The parents and stu- dents came back just buzzing with it,'' Mrs Knarston says. So what is the appeal of rogaine? You get to run around and find the clues and every member of the team gets to have a role,'' Sota Osaki, 9, says. Mrs Knarston says the children have learned such a lot from this pro- ject, not just in map reading skills. Anyone keen on tech- nology will be pleased to learn that the event can be completed using a smartphone rather than pen and paper. QR codes will be placed at all the markers and can be scanned using a smart- phone. The school is grateful for the support of Shaun Collins of Lactic Turkey Events who runs rogaine events professionally. Registration will be at Meadowbank School from 1pm and the race will start at 2pm. Teams canbemadeupofupto five people and must include one adult. There will be a sausage sizzle at the school after the event. Go to meadowbank rogaine.wikispaces.com for more information.
