Tinnitus study starts

Listen closely: Dr Grant Searchfield is
working on a tinnitus research project.

-- research being conducted at the Uni-

could soon bring a solution.
Head of audiology Dr Grant Search-

He says the biggest myth about tin-
nitus is that there's nothing you can do
about it. By training the brain to
ignore the sound of tinnitus, sufferers
can get huge relief, he says.
He is working with experts from the

come up with a replica of what each
person's tinnitus sounds like.
Noise exposure, age and injuries can
all trigger the condition.
We believe it's the brain trying to
compensate for changes at the ear
level. In trying to make up for the loss,
the brain makes mistakes and turns
the internal volume control up.''
He says the ultimate goal is to come
up with a clinical treatment for tin-
nitus. In the future he'd like to see a
treatment programme that sufferers
can use on their home computers.
The study is being funded by Link
