How to get rid of unsightly acne
Acne is one of the most common
skin conditions, affecting up to 85
per cent of New Zealanders aged
between 15 and 25 years. This is
mainly due to there being higher
levels of sex hormones, particu-
larly testosterone, at puberty.
Seeking medical treatment for
acne sooner rather than later can
reduce the possibility of acne scar-
ring and can help with any emo-
tional stress it can cause.
The oil glands, called sebaceous
glands, produce a substance called
sebum. The more sebum pro-
duced, the more build-up on the
skin surface and the more likely it
is that acne will be troublesome. If
sebum and keratin (dead skin
cells) block the skin pores then
little bumps can develop called
comedones. These are often
referred to as blind pimples, black
heads or white heads. Bacteria
and skin debris that accumulate
can then cause inflamed acne
pimples or pustules.
Treating acne starts with four
main steps - unclogging pores,
controlling oil flow, treating bac-
teria and calming irritation.
Most people with mild acne can
be treated with a combination of
topical skincare and medical pro-
cedures. The most effective topical
ingredients for unclogging pores
are alpha and beta hydroxy acids
and retinaldehyde. These help
normalise the exfoliation process
inside pores, helping to prevent
blockages. Topical application of
vitamin B3 (niacinamide) helps to
reduce excess oil flow.
The acne causing bacteria can
be effectively controlled with a
topical drug called benzoyl per-
oxide. Zinc oxide-based prepara-
tions can be used as a calming
concealer for reducing irritation
and accelerating healing time.
Vitamin B3 also helps with this.
Microdermabrasion and super-
ficial peels (glycolic/salicylic acid)
can also help mild acne.
Treatment of moderate to
severe acne usually includes a
combination of topical skin care
and an oral medication prescribed
by a dermatologist. Other treat-
ments that can help include:
Steroid injections, which may be
recommended to shrink large
Photodynamic therapy (PDT).
